Flitwick Scout Group has been buzzing with activity throughout the summer term, ending with their exhilarating summer camp. The young members, from the Squirrel Scouts to the Scouts, have been engaged in a plethora of thrilling and educational activities that have left them with unforgettable experiences and valuable skills.

The Squirrel Scouts, aged 4 and 5, achieved remarkable milestones during the summer term. These little adventurers embarked on a treasure hunt at Manor Park, honing their observation and teamwork skills. Over the term they constructed bee hotels, mini rafts and their own Corronation Crowns, ending the term with a mini summer fayre.

Two Squirrel Scouts, Sebastian Baldwin and James O’Brien, have now earnt all of the Squirrel activity badges on offer, the first two at the group to get all twelve since Squirrels launched. Sebastian said “I liked the experiment one the best!”

The Beaver Scouts, aged 6 and 7, took their exploration underground with caving expeditions that taught them about teamwork, communication, and resilience. They also mastered the art of fire lighting, a crucial survival skill that will stay with them for life.

As for the Cub Scouts, aged 8 to 10 and a half, they made a positive impact on the environment by crafting seed bombs for International Bee Day, promoting pollinator-friendly habitats. The Cubs further delved into nature by learning fire lighting techniques and engaging in backwoods cooking, enhancing their outdoor skills.

The Scouts, aged 10 and a half to 14, honed their culinary expertise through cooking exercises, embraced the thrill of cycling, and refined their fire lighting abilities, demonstrating their aptitude for self-sufficiency and resourcefulness.

The pinnacle of their summer adventures was the exhilarating summer camp held at Thriftwood, Essex. Cubs and Scouts came together for a memorable journey packed with exciting challenges. From hiking through scenic countryside to mastering the art of pioneering and campfire cooking, their teamwork and resilience were put to the test. The camp's activities, including fishing, Postmans Walk, Vertical Assault, Kayaking, Crate Stacking, Jacob's Ladder, Zip Line, Rafting, Cave Bus, Abseiling, and Water Roller, provided a diverse range of experiences that fostered personal
growth and a sense of adventure. Christine Stacy, parent to one of the Cubs, said “Thank you so much to the leaders for the last few days, Daniel has had an amazing time and hasn’t stopped talking about it!”

Flitwick Scout Group's commitment to providing a holistic learning environment that nurtures essential life skills and values is evident in their remarkable summer term and camp. As the sun sets on this season of adventure, the memories and lessons learned will undoubtedly linger in the hearts and minds of these young Scouts for years to come.

Flitwick Scout Group's June group camp was an exhilarating affair, bringing together over 100 young people for an unforgettable weekend of fun and friendship. It was the first time the whole group had camped together for 4 years.

The event saw the participation of all sections of the group, with Beaver Scouts (ages 6 to 8), Cub Scouts (ages 8 to 10 and a half), and Scouts (ages 10 and a half to 14) camping – the first time away for some. The youngest section of the group, Squirrel Scouts (ages 4 and 5), joined for the day on Saturday. At the start of Saturday, the lead volunteer for Bedfordshire Scouts attended to present an award to Flitwick Scout Group for being the largest growing group in the county, and another award to Barry Hodgkinson, one of the Cub Leaders, for 40 years in Scouting.

The campsite came alive with laughter and excitement as the scouts of all ages engaged in a plethora of activities. Traditional scout activities were at the heart of the experience, providing a wonderful blend of learning and adventure.

Throughout the weekend, scouts were immersed in backwoods cooking, honing their culinary skills over campfires and relishing delicious meals together. The joy of teamwork was evident as they navigated obstacle courses, solved puzzles, and conquered challenges that demanded cooperation and communication.

Craft sessions brought out their creative sides, allowing the young minds to express themselves. The camp buzzed with curiosity and exploration as scouts delved into the wonders of science and nature, gaining insights into the surrounding flora and fauna.

As the sun set on Saturday, the campfire brought everyone together for an enchanting evening of songs, stories, and cherished memories. The flickering flames kindled a sense of togetherness and belonging that will be etched in their hearts forever.

Sunday offered new adventures, with Cubs taking aim in archery sessions, refining their focus and precision. Meanwhile, the Scouts embarked on an enthralling caving exploration and go cart races (in between taking their tents down). Jack Marriot, one of the Scouts attending, said “Group Camp was really fun – my favourite activities were the tunnles and go carting”.

The camp exemplified the spirit of scouting, instilling valuable life skills, a love for nature, and a passion for teamwork among the young participants. The event's success can be attributed to the dedication of leaders and the enthusiasm of the scouts themselves. Hannah Crane said “I can’t thank all the leaders and helpers enough, Dexter and Harvey have had the best time. You all honestly go over and above to make some awesome memories”.

As the weekend ended, the memories created during this special weekend will continue to inspire and unite Flitwick's young scouts on their journey of growth, friendship, and adventure.

It has been a busy term since we started back in January! All sections have been getting on with lots of different activities throughout the term.

Beaver Scouts (boys and girls aged 6 and 7) had an exciting March – their first Beaver sleepover! Michelle, one of the Beaver’s parents, said “A big thank you to all the leaders & helpers for giving our Beavers a great experience”. They worked towards the Air Activities badge, learning about aircraft and flying kites. Tuesday Beavers visited Ferndale Residential Home where they delivered pots they had planted bulbs into earlier in the year.

Squirrel Scouts (boys and girls aged 4 and 5) have been working towards their “feel good” badge with yoga and mindfulness. They also covered various STEM topics by exploring different senses, building a selection of structures (including a den!) and learning about planes with visitors from Shuttleworth.

Cub Scouts (boys and girls aged 8 to 10 and a half) visited a local fire station to learn about what fire fighters do (and how to use the hose). With the days getting longer they got outside and went for a walk around the local area.

Scouts (boys and girls aged 10 to 14) have brushed up on their navigation and emergency aid skills, and ended the term with firelighting and a campfire.
